SooToday.com received the following comments today from Ward Two City Councillor Susan Myers regarding the recent announcement that Michael Burtch has retired from his position as curator of the Art Gallery of Algoma.

He took on the position in 1981 and has been instrumental in the growth of the gallery, including its sizable permanent collection.

Burtch's retirement comes shortly after the death of his wife Linda who passed away in April of this year.

In October 2003, upon retiring from the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, Michael Burtch was the first person to call me and ask would I consider coming onto the Board of Directors for the Art Gallery of Algoma.

So began my huge learning curve into the world of visual arts and there also, began my deep appreciation for this man and all that he has done for our community over thirty years at the helm of the Art Gallery of Algoma.

From 1989 when returning to the Sault to the tourism industry, until fall 2003, I knew of Michael as Mr. Art.

The Art Gallery was a very important part of our tourism offerings in Sault Ste. Marie and under Michael’s hand, it became more so with the introduction of joint marketing efforts and unique event uses for the Gallery, that he introduced at a time when people did not readily connect tourism and Art Galleries.

Later when the province of Ontario began to look at Arts and Cultural Tourism Experiences and realized their importance, Sault Ste. Marie was well positioned to build upon programs because of Michael’s vision.

As a Board member, I learned how financially straining it is to operate an Art Gallery.

On many occasions I saw Michael – Curator Director, on his hands and knees working shoulder to shoulder with his staff and volunteers doing repairs or installing a new exhibit.

In part, this was because AGA could not afford to hire extra help but also it demonstrates how deeply committed and passionate he was to making sure something was done just right.

I also recall his hard work and lobbying efforts with City Councils of the past and present, in requesting core funding for the Art Gallery – it was always hard to say no to Michael when his passion and exuberance was unleashed at budget time.

When Dr. Roberta Bondar brought each of her photographic exhibits to the Sault, Passionate Vission, Landscape of Dreams and Aridland, I had occasion to witness how Michael interacts with guest artists.

Always gracious and hospitable, offering any assistance needed.

Michael was an ambassador for the arts in this community and represented us very well to all who visited.

He treated all who came to exhibit with grace and humility, expressing enthusiasm as a true appreciator of the medium presented by the visiting artist.

Michael Burtch, has been a gift to this community and he will be missed in his leadership role at AGA.

He leaves a very capable team of people in whom he has imprinted his philosophy and passion so we are in good hands.

I am very glad to know he is not leaving town and that he will be continuing to teach and educate us for years to come.

No pedestal for Michael, that was reserved for his sculptures.

Thank you Michael and best wishes always.
