'So grateful': Local auto parts firm buys hospital new bladder scanner

Atlas Auto Parts has answered the call.

In a recent donor newsletter, the Sault Area Hospital Foundation (SAHF) mentioned the hospital was in need of a new bladder scanner.

As a former SAHF board member, Barry Bailey, the auto parts supplier’s vice president, knew the only way the hospital gets this kind of new equipment is through community donations. 

So Atlas Auto Parts, a longtime supporter of the foundation, donated $22,594 to buy the new scanner.

“Bladder scanners are so important to have, in all areas of the hospital,” said Sara Mizzi, the hospital’s patient care manager of ambulatory care, in a news release. 

“They allow us to assess the volume of urine that is retained within the bladder. Using a bladder scanner can reduce unnecessary catheterization. Avoiding catheters can reduce the risk of infections, falls and may also decrease the length of stay for patients in hospital.” 

According to the foundation, non-invasive bladder scanners are used every day across the hospital. The type of portable ultrasound can measure how full the bladder is and whether it can completely empty.

Bailey said his company wanted to make sure the local hospital has the tools it needs to continue providing outstanding care to our community.

“We are so grateful for this continued support from Atlas Auto Parts,” added Teresa Martone, the SAHF’s executive director, Sault Area Hospital Foundation. 

“While we are always striving to share our Hospital’s needs, it is rare to get a response like this: with a donor outright funding the needed equipment. We are lucky to have such a community-minded organization step up to support the care of so many at SAH.”
