Sault Fire Services announces management changes in department

The Fire Services consists of four divisions, including Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention and Public Education, Support Services, and Community Emergency Management

The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services will undergo some management changes in the department. Deputy Fire Chief Stuart Cole, who has been working with Fire Service for nearly 31 years, retired at the end of April. He will be replaced by Platoon Chief Mike Oliverio, who joined the Service in 1993. Additionally, Assistant Chief of Support Services Dan Crozier will also retire in the near future after more than 24 years.

The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service is a proud partner within our community that provides exceptional service through prevention, education, protection and wellness.The Service is comprised of four divisions, including Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention and Public Education, Support Services, and Community Emergency Management. Sault Fire Services would like to inform the community of the recent and upcoming management changes in the department.

Deputy Fire Chief Stuart Cole has retired as of the end of April. Cole was hired with Fire Services on June 10, 1991. He progressed through the ranks of firefighter, became a captain and has served as deputy fire chief since September 2017.

Sault Fire Services want to thank Cole for his commitment to our service and the community. Congratulations, Deputy Chief Cole. Enjoy a happy and healthy retirement.

Replacing Cole in the role of deputy fire chief will be Mike Oliverio. Oliverio was hired with Fire Services on Jan. 11, 1993. He also progressed through our ranks as a firefighter, captain and has been a platoon chief since November 2020.

Oliverio brings 29 years of operational experience to the deputy chief role. He commenced his new position on April 30, 2022. Sault Fire Services wish the best to Oliverio in his new role.

“I want to thank deputy chief cole for his leadership and commitment to our Service. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dedicated individual,” said Fire Chief Peter Johnson. "I also would like to congratulate Mike on his promotion to deputy chief. Mike will excel in this role; His operational experience and knowledge of our Service are invaluable towards our success as an organization”.

Sault Fire Services would also acknowledge the upcoming retirement of assistant chief of Support Services, Dan Crozier, after being with the Service for over 24 years.

“Assistant Chief Crozier will be retiring at the end of May. We thank Dan for his commitment to the Support Services division as a mechanic and assistant chief,” said Fire Chief Peter Johnson. “Our Service has greatly benefited from the efforts of Assistant Chief Crozier.”
