Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $2 billion in federal funding for back-to-school initiatives. Of this, $381 million is allotted for Ontario.

During his press statement today, Premier Doug Ford stated the funds will be utilized to enhance school transportation plans; the hiring of additional public health nurses, custodial staff and educators; remote learning; and health and safety protocols.

Trudeau also announced an additional $112 million in funding for First Nations to support community measures to ensure a safe return to school on reserves.

“As a former teacher and a parent, I know first-hand the importance of school for kids’ social development and mental well-being, not to mention their ability to learn," Prime Minister Trudeau said in a news release issued today. "The return to school is also an important step to restart our economy and get parents back to work while not worrying about the health of their children. The Government of Canada will remain a close partner to provinces, territories, and First Nations as we work together to keep children, families, and all Canadians safe and healthy during this difficult time.”

A statement issued today by Sault Ste. Marie MP Terry Sheehan follows:

“Over the past few months, I've heard from parents, families, and students about their concerns on the restart of schools. We all want our students to get a top-quality Canadian education, and we also understand the need to keep our kids safe and healthy.

"That's why I'm delighted with this announcement by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and our government. The Safe Return to Class Fund will help our kids stay safe upon returning to school while lifting some of the burden from parents' shoulders. This includes support for provinces to adapt learning spaces, improve air ventilation, and purchase masks and sanitizer for students.

"As a former school trustee, I know how important these resources will be for our schools, our kids, parents, teachers and school staff all across Canada. I wish students from the Algoma District School Board, the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board, le Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l'Ontario, et le Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon the very best this year, and I hope the support from our government makes back-to-school a little easier.”
