Province reports 108 new COVID cases today

One more person has died from the virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to almost 2,800 in Ontario since the pandemic began

Ontario Public Health is reporting 108 new cases of COVID-19 in the province this morning. 

This comes on the heels of Friday's report when 131 new cases were confirmed. 

One more person has also died from the virus in the last 24 hours. 

There have now been 2,797 deaths from the virus since mid-January. The majority of the deaths — 1,804 — have been people living in long-term care facilities. 

Saturday's new numbers bring the total tally of cases to 41,287 in Ontario since the pandemic began. Of those more than 41,000 cases, health officials say 37,487 people have recovered, which is an increase of 90 since the last report on Friday. 

Across the province, more than 2.7 million COVID tests have been completed, including almost 29,000 in the last 24 hours. There are just shy of 18,000 cases currently under investigation. 

Forty people are currently hospitalized in Ontario and being treated for COVID-19. Thirteen of those patients are in intensive care units and seven are on ventilators. 

The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health - 27 cases, rate of 23.6 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 35 cases, rate of 27 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 37 cases. There are no known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit - 72, rate of 86.3 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 93 cases, rate of 46.2 per 100,000 population. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit - 43 cases, rate of 49 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 44 cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 101 cases, rate of 67.4 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 102 cases. There are no known active cases.
