Police will enforce five-person gathering limit says chief in video statement

Fines for those who ignore the rules will be 'significant'

Police Chief Hugh Stevenson says officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will be enforcing provincial rules that prohibit gatherings of more than five people to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

"Please know we will be enforcing this mandate," says Stevenson. "Sault Police will be using a discretionary graduated approach."

Stevenson said first contact will be a phone warning to discontinue the gathering.

"If you fail to comply, we will be laying charges that are significant," he said.

Stevenson says failing to comply under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act comes with a minimum $750 fine for a first offence.

"These are uncertain times, but by staying committed, staying home and by practicing social distancing we will get through this together," said the chief.
