Ontario reports 477 new cases of COVID-19 today

The province is also reporting 63 more deaths and 421 recoveries in the daily update

Ontario reported 477 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in today’s update, which is slightly higher than 421 recoveries reported today.

The province’s update also states there have been 63 more deaths linked to the coronavirus.

Among the new deaths reported today are two people between the ages of 40 and 59, 17 people between the ages of 60 and 79, and 44 people over the age of 80.

Of the province’s total cumulative cases (19,598), there have been 13,990 recoveries (71.4 per cent) and 1,540 deaths (7.9 per cent) reported.

There are 1,028 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, and 213 of those are in intensive care units. There are 166 people on ventilators.

About 57 per cent of the province’s cases have been female and 42 per cent have been males.

The total number of tests completed to date is 397,149, and there were 16,295 tests processed in the province on Wednesday. There are 14,641 tests awaiting results.

The Ministry of Long-Term Care is reporting 175 outbreaks at long-term care facilities including 2,782 confirmed cases in residents, 1,707 confirmed cases in staff, and 1,150 resident deaths linked to the coronavirus.

There have been a total of 3,230 cases confirmed in health care workers, according to Public Health Ontario, which is about 16.5 per cent of the total cases confirmed in Ontario. There is no data on what percentage of those health care workers caught the virus at work.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 79. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 75.5 per 100,000 people.

According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to May 7, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:

• Algoma Public Health - 16 cases, rate of 14 per 100,000 population

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 17 cases, rate of 13.1 per 100,000 population

• Porcupine Health Unit - 63, rate of 75.5 per 100,000 population (a 64th case was reported today)

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 57 cases, rate of 28.6 per 100,000 population

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 79 cases, rate of 52.7 per 100,000 population

• Northwestern Health Unit - 15 cases, rate of 17.1 per 100,000 population

According to the report, in Northeastern Ontario, there have been 171 confirmed cases, and the rate is 30.6 per 100,000 population. In Northwestern Ontario, there have been 94 cases and a rate of 39.6. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 131.8.
