Ontario reports 163 new COVID-19 cases today

The province is reporting a 24 per cent drop in new cases compared to yesterday

Ontario's active cases of COVID-19 have decreased today with 163 new cases reported and 229 new recoveries reported. 

Today's new cases have dropped by 24 per cent compared to yesterday's reported 216 new cases.

Testing has edged back up to over 20,000 with 23,207 processed tests reported today, which is an increase over the 16,000 reported completed yesterday. 

Yesterday, the province reported its first death in a person under the age of 19. 

According to reports by the CBC, Toronto Public Health reported the death of a girl under the age of 10, but public health officials reported the girl died with COVID-19, not as a result of COVID-19. Her death is still under investigation by the Ontario coroner's office. 

Public Health Ontario reported 12 more deaths today including one person between the ages of 40 and 59, five people between the ages of 60 and 79, and six people over the age of 80. 

The province has reported a total of 2,631 deaths attributed to the coronavirus to-date, which is 7.7 per cent of all cases confirmed in Ontario. 

There have been 34,016 cases confirmed so far, with 29,336 of those cases (86.2 per cent) now reported recovered.

Of the remaining 2,049 active cases of COVID in the province, 278 people are hospitalized with 73 people in intensive care and 48 patients on ventilators with COVID-19. 

According to today's report there are now 73 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 17 at retirement homes, and four at hospitals. Cumulatively, there have been 355 outbreaks at long-term care homes, 153 at retirement homes, and 90 at hospitals in Ontario.

There are 20 known active cases of the virus in Northern Ontario.

Today's provincial report includes data from Jan. 15 to June 23 and includes the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population. Data included on resolved cases is from each health unit's respective website. The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 24 cases, rate of 21 per 100,000 population. There are 23 resolved cases, and one active.

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 28 cases, rate of 21.6 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 30 cases. Of those, 28 are resolved and there has been one death. There is one known active case.

• Porcupine Health Unit - 67, rate of 80.3 per 100,000 population. Of the confirmed cases, 57 are resolved and eight people have died. There are two known active cases of the virus. The last positive test was done June 21.

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 67 cases, rate of 33.7 per 100,000 population. There are 64 resolved cases and two people have died. There is one known active case.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 90 cases, rate of 60 per 100,000 population. There are 84 resolved cases and one person has died. There are five known active cases, three of which are hospitalized.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 36 cases, rate of 41.1  per 100,000 population. There are 26 resolved cases, and 10 active ones.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 228.8.
