Ontario confirms record 1,855 new COVID cases today

The province is also reporting a record number of tests processed

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,855 new cases of COVID-19 today, which is a nearly 15 per cent increase over the previous daily record number of new cases. 

Until today, the province has not reported more than 1,588 cases in a single day. 

Today's report also includes a record number of tests processed – 58,037 in 24 hours, which produced a 3.7 per cent positivity rate. The percentage of positive cases is the lowest it's been all week.

Since the start of the pandemic, public health labs in Ontario have processed 6.1 million COVID-19 tests.

Ontario's public health agency has reported 20 deaths today. The deaths include one person between the ages of 40 and 59 years old, six people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 13 people over the age of 80. Fourteen of the people who died were residents of long-term care facilities. 

Since yesterday, 69 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and 10 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units. 

Included in the 1,855 new cases reported today are 572 cases from Peel, 111 cases from York Region, and 356 cases from Toronto.

There are 122 new school-related COVID-19 cases included in today's provincial reporting, including 99 student cases and 23 staff cases. 

The province reported 1,451 new recoveries today.

The number of active cases in the province (people self-isolating or hospitalized) has increased today to 13,255 lab-confirmed cases from 12,871 active cases reported yesterday. There are 541 people hospitalized with the coronavirus (down from 556 yesterday) and 151 of those patients are in intensive care units. There are 101 COVID patients on ventilators. 

To date, the province has confirmed 111,216 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario and reported 94,366 recoveries and 3,595 deaths. 

In Northern Ontario, all but two of the health unit regions are currently classified as green under the province’s new regional restrictions. It means the areas are permitted the broadest allowance of Stage 3 activities.

Public Health Sudbury and District and Thunder Bay District Health Unit are in the yellow (protect) restriction level.

The breakdown of Public Health Ontario data for the rate of cases for Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 60 cases, rate of 52.4 per 100,000 people. There are three known active cases. The last cases were reported Nov. 24.

  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 73 cases, rate of 54.7 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported an additional case, bringing the total to 74. There are 12 known active cases. The last cases were reported Nov. 25.

  • Porcupine Health Unit: 106, rate of 127 per 100,000 people. There are two known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 20.

  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 227 cases, rate of 113.1 per 100,000 people. The health unit has since reported one additional case, bringing the total to 228. There are 14 known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 24.

  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000 people. There is one known active case. The last case was reported Nov. 15.

  • Northwestern Health Unit: 111 cases, rate of 126.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has also reported two probable cases. There are 22 known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 26.

  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 253 cases, rate of 168.7 per 100,000 people. The health unit has since reported one new case, bringing the total to 254. There are 67 known active cases. The last cases were reported Nov. 26.

The cumulative incidence rate for COVID-19 in Ontario is 748.2 cases per 100,000 people. The weekly incidence rate is 66.3 cases per 100,000 people.
