Ontario confirms 133 new COVID cases today

The province has now processed more than 3-million COVID-19 tests since January

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 133 new cases of COVID-19, and is reporting no new deaths today. 

Today, the province also reported the three-millionth COVID-19 test processed. There have been 3,013,892 tests processed in Ontario labs since January, with 24,004 processed since yesterday's report. In March, the province was processing fewer than 1,000 tests per day. By the end of April, the province reached between 15,000 and 20,000 test per day, and since then, Ontario labs have processed as many as 34,000 tests in a day. 

Among today's 133 new cases, are 57 individuals between 20 and 39 years old, and 41 individuals between 40 and 59 years old. There were no new cases reported in anyone over 80 years old. 

According to a breakdown of the cases per health unit included in today's provincial summary, 21 of Ontario's 34 health units reported no new cases. Toronto reported 43 new cases, Peel reported 34 new cases, York Region reported 15, and Ottawa reported 12. Those four health units combined accounted for 78 per cent of the 133 cases reported today. 

To date, the province has confirmed 42,554 cases of COVID-19 and an average incidence rate of 286.3 cases per 100,000 people in the population. 

Public Health Ontario reported another 137 recoveries today bringing the cumulative total of recovered cases to 38,506. The province has also reported 2,812 cases have ended in death. 

There are currently 1,236 active cases of COVID-19 in Ontario including 60 people who are hospitalized with COVID-19. There are 13 patients in intensive care and nine patients on ventilators. 

In Northern Ontario there are three known active cases.

The breakdown for the health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 28 cases, rate of 24.5 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases.

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 35 cases, rate of 27 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 37 cases. There are no known active cases.

• Porcupine Health Unit - 73, rate of 87.5 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases.

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 94 cases, rate of 47.2 per 100,000 population. There is one known active case.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 46 cases, rate of 52.5 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 47 cases. There are two known active cases.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 103 cases, rate of 68.7 per 100,000.There are no known active cases.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 286.3.
