Steel City Nerdcon has been cancelled this year due to concerns over a potential spike in COVID-19 cases.

Michael Turcotte of Vintage Games N' Junque - who organizes the annual exhibition of pop culture collectibles and memorabilia alongside his wife, Beth Davison - confirmed the cancellation with SooToday Wednesday.

"With COVID numbers spiking in the last few days, we have made the hard decision to cancel our show next month," reads a social media post that appeared on the Vintage Games N' Junque Facebook page Tuesday. "We can only assume that, with the way things are going right now, that the predicted fall spike may soon be upon us."

"As excited as we were to bring even a small show, we feel that it may not be safe to do so. Everyone’s safety is our first priority. We apologize greatly to all who had their hopes up and were looking forward to the event. We are as saddened as you are. Fingers crossed for an even bigger and better NerdCon next year!"

This year would have marked the third year for the event.
