Local conservation area parking lots reopen

Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority asks public to follow physical distancing, social gathering guidelines

Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) quietly reopened parking lots at its conservation areas at Fort Creek and Mark's Bay this past Monday.

"We have placed COVID signage about social distancing, cleaned the areas up, and removed the barriers," said Sault Ste. Marie Conservation Authority general manager Corrina Barrett in an email to SooToday.

Public washrooms and the picnic pavilion at Fort Creek Conservation Area remain closed as a precaution due to COVID-19.

"While all SSMRCA conservation areas are open to the public, guests are reminded that visiting these areas is done at their own risk," said Barrett. "We would also like to remind residents to please adhere to physical distancing rules, please keep social gatherings to ten people or less, and to please follow trail etiquette - what you bring in should be leaving with you.”

On Wednesday, The City of Sault Ste. Marie announced that Pointe Des Chenes campground, beach and day park will open to the public Friday under Stage 2 of Ontario’s reopening plan.
