Health-care worker at SAH tests positive for COVID-19

The staffer has been isolating since receiving notification of exposure, says SAH

Sault Area Hospital has confirmed that a health-care worker tested positive for COVID-19.

SAH said in a press release issued today that it has confirmed all appropriate and best practice infection prevention and control measures were taken to avoid the spread among staff and patients.

According to SAH, the staff member was tested following a community exposure to a COVID-19-positive individual and has remained in self-isolation at home since receiving notification of the exposure.

Contact tracing is taking place.

The press release from SAH states, "We want to assure you that SAH is taking all proper precautions and steps to keep all staff, physicians, volunteers and patients safe, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment, limiting visitors, active screening of patients and visitors, increased cleaning and sanitation of our public areas and equipment. We will continue to closely monitor the situation."

To date, 110 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Algoma region. Currently, there are 44 active cases in Algoma residents and one case in a non-Algoma resident temporarily in the area.

In Sault Ste. Marie, Mi., the Chippewa County Health Department has confirmed 1525 cases, 968 of which are recovered. The health unit has reported 15 deaths to date, and eight people are currently hospitalized with the virus.
