COVID-19 outbreak declared at Great Northern Retirement Home

Algoma Public Health has declared an outbreak at Great Northern Retirement Home (GNRH) following the confirmation of COVID-19 in one staff member.

According to a news release issued today, the staff member is currently in isolation and surveillance testing of staff and residents is now being completed.

The health unit says it is "working closely with the home's care team to take further preventative actions to protect staff and residents."

Currently, there are 39 active cases of COVID-19 among Algoma residents, and one case in a non-Algoma resident temporarily in the region. To date, Algoma Public Health has reported 104 confirmed cases of the virus, 65 of which are resolved. Our region has not yet reported any COVID-19-related deaths.

Comparatively, in Sault Ste. Marie Mi, the Chippewa County Health Department has reported 1525 cases of COVID-19 since March, 968 of which have been resolved. The health unit has reported 15 COVID-19-related deaths and eight people are currently hospitalized with the virus.
