On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau devoted much of his daily address to the nation, which normally involves COVID-19 matters, to the shooting spree which happened in Nova Scotia over the weekend, which left 18 people dead, plus the shooter (police anticipating the death toll could rise as their investigation continues).

Trudeau said a virtual vigil will be held later this week to remember the victims.

While the House of Commons has been shut down due to COVID-19 concerns, leaders are attempting to hammer out a deal whereby MPs may meet in the Commons to conduct the nation’s business.

The Liberal government is proposing to hold one in-person House of Commons sitting a week, to be held on Wednesdays with limited staff, along with some extra 90 minute virtual sittings each week for MPs to question the government.

The Conservatives have voiced their opposition to that proposal, while the other opposition parties support it.

The Ontario government released updated COVID-19 modelling at a media conference Monday.

Key points from the update include:

  • New community spread cases of COVID-19 in Ontario seem to have peaked
  • Outbreaks in long-term care homes are still a major concern
  • The province says it is critical Ontarians keep adhering to public health measures, including staying home and practicing physical distancing if they must go out for essential reasons only.

Here are the latest COVID-19 numbers for the Algoma District from Algoma Public Health:
