Garden River First Nation is alerting band members to a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the community.

A community notice posted to the First Nation's official social media page Wednesday night indicates the resident and all close contacts are currently self-isolating. Algoma Public Health is working with community nurses to provide follow-up and support for the affected resident.

"I want to stress the importance that any individual that has COVID-19 needs to be treated with compassion, support and have access to healthcare services," said Garden River First Nation Chief Andy Rickard, in a video posted on the First Nation's social media page Wednesday. "We also understand that this might be a scary time for individuals, and we just want to let you know that we are here to provide whatever supports needed in order to get through this together."

On Tuesday, Garden River First Nation leadership announced that restricted access to the community will go into effect Jan. 7 at 12 p.m. The First Nation restricted access to the community for a period of two months beginning in April of last year.

Community members can contact nursing staff Garden River Wellness Center at (249) 525-6459 for any health-related matters or support services during the course of the pandemic.

Questions, information and complaints regarding travel restrictions, mandatory quarantine orders and COVID-19 updates can be directed in confidence to Garden River First Nation Response Coordinator Tanya Boissoneau at (705) 971-7833 or via email at [email protected]
