DISTRIBUTION TECHNICIAN

As a member of a multi-disciplined engineering team, the incumbent will be responsible for a wide range of engineering related activities. These activities include general system planning, technical support to Operations and Customer Service departments, developing projects and designs for delivery of electrical services to customers and being involved in the planning and project management of our capital and maintenance programs.

The main duties and responsibilities include:
• Complete connection plans for new or upgraded service requests.
• Perform layouts and design for overhead and underground distribution and sub-transmission line projects.
• Prepare project estimates taking into consideration such variables as structures, spans, soil types, components, and work methods.
• Perform minor field surveys and staking activities.
• Provide project management oversight for capital projects which includes performing pre-job assessments, work coordination with internal crews and external third parties, budgeting, design and engineering, quality assurance and quality checks throughout the project.
• Provide technical support to other departments as needed.
• Provide assistance related to inquiries, investigations, engineering analysis.
• Assist with the preparation of various technical reports.
• Assist with conducting a variety of activities to maintain accurate and up-to-date records for the daily operations.
• Participate in community meetings to provide project specific information to customers and general public.

The candidate will ideally have the following skills and qualifications:
• Electrical Engineering Technician Diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 3-5 years of experience as Electrical Engineering Technician or possess equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A certified member or eligible for membership in OACETT.
• Working knowledge and experience with structural line design and associated software, such as PLS CADD, SPIDA software etc.
• Thorough understanding of powerline systems operation (generation, transmission & distribution)
• Thorough understanding of design standards, such as CSA, IEEE, ANSI etc.
• Thorough understanding of engineering practices, procedures and standards including line layouts, staking, joint use, protective coordination, voltage improvement techniques, estimating, work schedule activities
• Experience in providing quality customer service
• Knowledge of land management matters such as property settlements, easements, acquisitions of easement rights, etc.
• Thorough knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite, CAD, GIS and SAP
• Experience with design software is an asset
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract
• Good oral communication and report writing skills
• Attention to detail and ability to complete work with high degree of accuracy
• Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgement and maintain confidentiality
• Proven team player, strong problem solving and interpersonal skills
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, customers and industry partners
• Ability to be flexible and adjust priorities as needed
• Ability to effectively achieve desired results within specified timelines
• Must possess a strong customer service orientation and have excellent verbal and written communications skills
• Previous experience working in a utility environment would be considered an asset
