Wesdome Gold Mines has had over 30 years of continuous gold mining operations in Canada.  The Company is 100% Canadian focused with a pipeline of projects in various stages of development.  The Company’s strategy is to build Canada’s next intermediate gold producer, producing 200,000+ ounces from two mines in Ontario and Quebec.  The Eagle River Complex in Wawa, Ontario is currently producing gold at the Eagle River Underground Mine.  Wesdome started production at the Kiena Complex in Val d’Or, Quebec in December 2022. The Company trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol “WDO”.

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Health and Safety Lead, the Registered Nurse is responsible for ensuring and promoting health and safety compliance and for providing health expertise through prevention, recognition, and treatment of any personnel health and wellness issues, including providing injury management such as return to work processes and the implementation of the occupational health programme.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Accountabilities and duties will include but not limited to the following:

  • Identify workplace risks and focus on protection measures in a client centred environment. 
  • 24/7 Call for a response via phone/Virtual assessment or in person if required while on-site for shifts. Availability for emergencies is a requirement for this role. 
  • Evaluate specific (flagged) Audiometry, Spirometry, X-ray, and bloodwork testing results for follow-up or direct to family physician. 
  • Proper tracking/record keeping of individual medication, health assessments, and complete documents/logs related to communication between client and contractor and retain them for audit purposes or requests from the client. 
  • Conduct annual medical testing on-site using Client equipment (or NorthStream rented equipment) for medical/spirometry/audiometry and other annual medical testing. 
  • Assist with Hygiene programs, lead airborne sampling as per silica control programs and lead testing programs to promote Health and Safety policies/procedures and legal compliance. 
  • Assist in the treatment planning and return-to-work through coordination and documentation control, including case management recovery of injured and ill workers. Working with Human Resources on monitoring with WSIB. 
  • Assist in coordinating first aid and CPR courses, Naloxone training, and additional health and emergency response training courses. 
  • Assist in pre-employment screening, DOT and/or N-Dot tests, Drug and Alcohol, Audiometric, Spirometry, vision, airborne sampling, noise control programs and other tests and preventive measures as needed. 
  • Proper administration of COVID-19 sampling, and other tests required. 
  • Collaboration with client, HR, H&S, lab technicians and doctors as required. 
  • Creating a calm and positive experience for the clients 
  • Offer lifestyle-work balance coping skills to enhance worker’s health. 
  • Manage the fit for duty program and perform different tests required according to the policy. 
  • Provide primary care for injured or ill workers on site and follow up on their status when they are off site. 
  • Supervise the light duty work program by ensuring the work assigned to the worker fits with their limitations. Weekly follow up on their progress and ensure the return to work is completed as required. 
  • Develop and maintain the Health & Safety and Hygiene programs, attend JHSC meetings. 
  • Lead the airborne sampling as per the Silica control program at the Mine and Mill, the lead control program at the Wawa lab and the DPM Program at the mine. Investigate and make recommendations to management when there are exceedances and report the results to the JHSC. 
  • Train workers in first aid and assist the Mine Rescue as needed. 
  • Maintain accurate record keeping systems in compliance with Occupational Health Standards. 
  • Participate in professional nursing organizations (i.e., RNAO, OHNIG and maintain professional growth and development). 
  • Maintain available equipment in the first aid room on surface and underground in the refuge station. 
  • The nurse may be consulted outside working hours as needed and may have to go underground occasionally depending on the needs of the operation.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Currently a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing. 
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in an outpatient clinic, acute care, or ambulatory care settings.
  • Critical incident stress debriefing training.
  • Valid Standard and/or Advanced First Aid/CPR/BLS training. 
  • Professional behaviour and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women’s College Hospital. 
  • Previous experience in an industrial setting preferred working with diverse population. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Must be able to work independently and within a team structure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and share point. 
  • This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment with a client centred approach. 
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence.

Location and Logistics of the Role

  • This position is located at our Eagle River Mine location near Wawa, ON;
  • In this role, you will work a 7 days in / 7 days out or 4/3 schedule and therefore you will have meals and accommodations provided at our camp;
  • 12 hours / day;
