71 Charges Laid in August Traffic Initiative

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, consistent with its 2012 Traffic Management Plan, put a particular emphasis on intersection related offences during the month of August.

Resulting from this selective enforcement initiative, 44 drivers were charged with intersection related offences. In addition to those 44 charges, an additional 27 motorists were charged during this same time and initiative with using a hand-held communication device while driving.

The likelihood of being involved in an intersection related accident is significantly greater than on any other portion of our roadways. Drivers and pedestrians are to be cognizant of and obey all traffic signals controlling their movements while remaining vigilant of other traffic moving around them.

With 27 charges being levied during the month of August against drivers using hand-held communication devices the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will continue to aggressively target individuals who chose to drive, while using these devices, with the hope and expectation that these instances can be reduced to zero.

The fine for driving while using a hand-held communication device is $155.00.
