School Bus Reminder

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service’s Traffic Unit has recently investigated a complaint of a motor vehicle not stopping for a school bus loading children while the overhead red flashing lights were activated.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists of their responsibility when meeting a school bus with the red overhead lights:

It is every driver’s duty to stop when the school bus activates the red overhead lights. Drivers in both directions must stop and not proceed until the overhead flashing red lights are turned off. Please be aware of the school busses and anticipate that they will be stopping and picking up passengers. There has been a small increase in the number of complaints from the school bus companies about drivers failing to stop for the school busses. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service will be increasing enforcement of these offences over the next couple of weeks. Two areas of concern are the Pym Street hill area, Second Line West and the Goulais Avenue area. Owners are reminded that they can be charged if someone uses their vehicle and fails to stop for school busses. Fines for failing to stop for a school bus range from $400.00 to $2000.00 and six demerit points. Each subsequent offence is $1000.00 to $4000.00, six demerit points and possibly up to six months jail time.

Please drive carefully.
