As a result of a post mortem examination conducted earlier today initial findings show that the cause of death of Darian Berg to be consistent with “fresh water drowning”. Police and the Coroners office are continuing their investigation into this death.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is asking all witnesses who were at the pool at the time of the incident to contact 949-6300.

SUDDEN DEATH AT JOHN RHODES COMMUNITY CENTRE POOL

Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are currently investigating a sudden death that occurred earlier today at the John Rhodes Community Centre Pool, 280 Elizabeth Street.

Emergency personnel responded to the pool area for an unresponsive child shortly after 2 pm. The child was transported to the Sault Area Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The deceased has been identified as seven year old Darian Berg of Sault Ste. Marie

Officers from Investigation Services are currently working with the Coroners Office on this investigation. A post mortem has been ordered for Wednesday July 23rd. The John Rhodes Community Centre has been released back to City Staff.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is asking any witnesses who were at the pool at the time of the incident to contact 949-6300.

One person for bail court:

Yesterday afternoon city police attended at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre and arrested a male for breach of a recognizance release. It is alleged that on June 17th 2008 David Godin, age 29, of no fixed address failed to report to city police as part of his release order. He is charged with one count of breach of recognizance.

Two men charged with theft under $ 5,000:

1) Yesterday afternoon city police attended at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre and charged a male with one count of theft under $ 5,000.00 and one count of obstruct police. It is alleged that on June 29th the accused, Tyson Seabrook, attended at Rome’s and stole two DVD players valued at approx. $ 452.00. The accused upon exiting the store was arrested by store security and turned over to police. It is further alleged that when police arrived the accused falsely identified himself to police. The accused Tyson Seabrook, age 25, of no fixed address is presently in custody on other theft related charges.

2) Yesterday afternoon at approx. 4:40 pm city police attended at the Station Mall L.C.B.O. regarding a shoplifter. Upon arrival store staff turned over a male to police. It is alleged that the male, 43-year-old Douglas Boston, of 41 Old Garden River Rd. Apt # 205, stole two bottles of beer. Mr. Boston is charged with one count of theft under $ 5,000.00 and will be appearing in court on Aug 25th at 9:00 am.

Male arrested on warrant:

Yesterday afternoon city police arrested a male on a warrant for fraud and uttering a forged document. It is alleged that the accused, Jamie-Kyle Hill uttered a forged document at the Wellington Square Drug Mart on June 6th in an attempt to obtain prescribed drugs. Jamie-Kyle Hill, age 23, of 484 Highway 17 East, Garden River is charged with one count of utter a forged document and one count of fraud. He will be appearing in court on Aug 25th at 9:00 am.

Mischief:

A door was damaged at a residence in the 100 block of Brock St.

Attempted Robbery:

Yesterday evening at approx. 10:20 pm a lone male entered Metallo’s Mini Mart, located at
147 Northern Ave E. and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk refused to give the suspect any money and chased the suspect off. The suspect is described as:
Male, white, 19-25 years of age, thin build, 5’6” - 5’7’ tall, dark hair. He was wearing a black hoodie and a red t-shirt over most of his face. The suspect was last seen running west on Northern Ave towards Grand St. Anyone having seen this suspect or having information on this incident is asked to call the Sault Ste Marie Police Service or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Break and enters:

City police investigated two reports of break and entered yesterday.
A residence in the 700 block of Second Line W. was entered - it is unknown at his time what was taken.
Thieves broke into an apartment in the 300 block of Albert St. E and stole electronic equipment.

Theft:

Cash was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 300 block of Great Northern Rd.
