Assault of Common-law Girlfriend Yesterday evening at approx. 7:10 pm officers from the Sault Ste Marie Police Service attended on Chambers Ave regarding a possible assault.
Assault of Common-law Girlfriend

Yesterday evening at approx. 7:10 pm officers from the Sault Ste Marie Police Service attended on Chambers Ave regarding a possible assault. It is alleged that the accused male had assaulted his common-law girlfriend by slapping her in the face. While the officers were arresting the male for assault the female assaulted the police officers and resisted arrest. As a result a 34-year-old male and a 17-year-old female were both arrested. The male is charged with one count of assault and will be appearing in bail court this morning. The young female is charged with one count of assault police and two counts of resist arrest. She will be appearing in court on Aug 21st. at 9:30 am.

Possession of Stolen Property

At approx. 11:50 am yesterday morning city police officers arrested 54-year-old Domas Balciunas and charged him with three count of possession of property obtained by crime. It is alleged that the accused pawned stolen items at various pawn shop about town. The offences occurred between Jan 9th and March 12, 2007.
Domas Balciunas, age 54 of 58 Hiawatha Dr, Garden River will be appearing in court on Aug 20th at 9:00 am.

St. Mary's Ave Gun Incident

Yesterday morning members of the Sault Ste Marie Police Service were dispatched to an address on St. Mary’s Ave regarding a male person having a gun. A citizen contacted police informing them that he had seen a male at 9 St. Mary’s Ave. with a sawed off shotgun. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service Emergency Services Unit, the Canine Unit and patrol officers attended and secured the area. At approx. 1:30 pm members of the Emergency Services Unit entered the residence and arrested a male. Hulbert Bain, age 45, of 47 Boston Ave is charged with one count of careless use of firearm, one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm, one count of possession of prohibited weapon and one count of unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon. The weapon seized was a Winchester shotgun. Mr. Hulbert will be appearing in bail court today. The streets in the area were re-opened at approx. 1:40 pm. No one was injured in this incident. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service, which diverted traffic around North St. during this incident, would like to thank the public for their co-operation.

Outstanding Warrants

Yesterday evening at approx. 5:45 pm Steven McCarthy was stopped by city police officers for a traffic infraction. Investigations by the officers revealed that the driver was wanted for two warrants. Charged with two counts of fail to appear for court is Steven McCarthy, age 22, of 357 Brule Rd. He will be appearing in court on Aug 20th.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service investigated three reports of break and enters over the past 24 hours.

A break-in was reported to a shed in the 100 block of Cathcart St. Stolen were a set of golf clubs and a bicycle.
A shed was also entered in the 1300 block of Peoples Rd. It is unknown what was stolen.
A break-in was reported to a residence in the 600 block of Douglas St. Liquor and some jewellery was stolen.

City police received two reports of mischief and two theft reports overnight.

A home in the 500 block of Placid Ave was egged, and a vehicle parked in the 1200 block of Queen St.E was scratched.
Unknown persons entered a shed in the 1300 block of Peoples Rd. it is unknown at this time what was taken. Lawn ornaments were reported stolen from a residence in the 100 block of Partridge Crt.
