CHILD MURDER SUSPECT CHARGED WITH BREACH OF COURT ORDER

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) in conjunction with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) have arrested and charged James PURCELL, age 30 of Sault Ste. Marie with one count of failing to comply with direction in detention order.

On November 12, 2009 at approximately 1:40 p.m., Aiden FLOYD-LAPINSKAS was transported to hospital after Ambulance Services responded to a report of a child in distress in an apartment on Old Garden River Road in Sault Ste. Marie. On November 16, 2009, the child died as a result of his injuries.

On January 12, 2010, the SSMPS arrested James PURCELL, aged 30 of Sault Ste- Marie, with one count of 2nd degree murder.

On January 13, 2010, PURCELL appeared in Sault Ste. Marie Provincial Court where a non communication order was imposed on him not to communicate with witnesses. Police received information that PURCELL breached the non communication order when he communicated with a named witness.

PURCELL appeared in Sault Ste. Marie Provincial Court on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 where his matter was adjourned to February 2, 2010 for video remand.

Second Person Arrested in Relation to Search Warrant Drug Offences

Earlier Release

On the 18th of January at approximately 3:38 p.m., members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Street Team and Emergency Services Unit executed a search warrant in the 300 block of Huron Street. On arrival, officers observed 46 year-old Douglas Harvey Martin to be in possession of and consuming alcohol, in contravention of a release condition. During the course of the search, officers located a 100 mg morphine tablet and a cannabis resin cigarette (spliff) in the possession of Doug Martin and a small amount of drug paraphernalia. The accused was also found in the company of a female that he is on conditions not to associate or communicate with. As a result, officers charged Douglas Harvey Martin of 609 Shafer Avenue was charged with three counts of breach of recognizance and two counts of possession of a controlled drug or substance.

In relation to this warrant, a second person was arrested on the 19th of January at 8:35 am at the city police station after turning herself in. It is alleged that the accused was found in possession of a small amount of morphine. Tracy Daigle of #4-262 Wellington Street West was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled drug or substance. She is to appear in court on the 22nd of February.

Breach Charges

22 year-old Helen Harvey of #1-220 Meadow Park Crescent was arrested on the19th of January at 7:38 pm and charged with one count of breach of a release order. It is alleged that on the 19th of January the accused was found on Meadow Park Crescent in an intoxicated state and at that time she was on a release undertaking with conditions to not consume any alcohol. She is to appear in court on the 22nd of February.

Theft Charges
A 17 year-old male youth was arrested on the 19th of January at 1:10 pm at a local high school and charged with one count of possession of stolen property. It is alleged that on the 18th of January the accused pawned a stolen iPod at a local pawn shop. The iPod had been reported stolen from a student locker at the high school on the 12th of January. The accused is to appear in court on the 23rd of February.
