With the heavy snow fall that as occurred over the past couple of days, the Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to remind parents and children about playing safe this winter season. Playing in the snow can be lots of fun but it does have its risks too. The following is a list of tips to help ensure your children’s safety during the winter months.

Children should:
Never walk and slide on snow banks which are close to the road.
Never build snow tunnels as they may collapse and the child may risk suffocating under the snow.
Move out of the way from road plows and trucks.
Wait until the school bus has come to a complete stop before approaching the door.
Always sit or kneel when sledding. Children are at a higher risk of head injuries if they lay down. They should wear a helmet.
Never go out alone to play. Children should go out in twos and be supervised by adults.
Never play too far from home.
Never attend the ice rinks or snow hills by themselves.
Where there no sidewalks or they’re snow covered always walk facing traffic.
Please don’t games on the roadway – there are plenty of safe locations to play games.

Parents should:
Make sure kids are dressed appropriately.
Supervise children who are outside.
Tell children where their boundaries are to play.
Supervise children at ice rinks and snow hills.
Parents if you are going to be delayed getting home make sure your children have a safe alternate place to go after school.

Please review these safety tips with your children and always remind them to play with caution.

Reminder to Motorists: Please adjust your driving to the weather and road conditions this morning.
