The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists to slow down. Some intersections, especially those on side streets are slippery. Yesterday 17 reports of motor vehicle collisions were taken. Many of those were attributed to drivers not adjusting their driving to the road conditions. Fortunately no one was hurt in any of the incidents.

Scam

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Fraud Unit are investigating two complaints where the complainants were scammed out of several hundreds of dollars by an unknown male with a "down on his luck' Christmas story. This male has approached the victims and asked them to deposit a personal cheque for him into their bank accounts and turn over the cash to him. The cheques are worthless and not even signed and the victims have no idea of the suspect's identity. The public is urged not to let their generosity be advantaged despite the story given. Anyone with information on this scam is asked to contact the fraud unit at 949-6300 ext. 388.

3 Males Appear in bail court

21-year old Myles Ketola of no fixed address was arrested yesterday on an outstanding warrant. It is alleged that on the 19th of June of this year the accused broke into a residence in the 100 block of Chestnut Street and assaulted a female residence. The accused has been charged with one count of assault and one count of break and enter and commit an offence.

A 48-year old male was arrested last evening around 10:30 pm after City Police attended at a downtown residence regarding a domestic dispute. It is alleged that the accused and his girlfriend got into a verbal argument and the police were called. The accused was on a release order not to be at the female’s residence at the time of the incident. The accused was also on probation at the time of the offence. The accused has been charged with one count of breach of probation and one count of breach of a release order.

41-year old Robert McKay of 464 Highway 638, Plummer Township was arrested last evening just after 9 pm and charged with a number of offences. The accused was wanted from an incident on the 4th of December in which it is alleged that he took a female person under the age of 16 years with out consent of the person’s parents or guardians. At the time of the offence the accused was on release documents not to be with the young person. On the 6th of December City Police had occasion to stop the accused in his vehicle on Wellington Street West and Conmee Avenue. Officers located the same young person in the accused vehicle. It is alleged that the accused picked the young person up at her residence and again took her without parental or guardian consent. Officers also alleged that the accused was operating his motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Mr. McKay has been charged with two counts of abduction of a person under the age of 16, 5 counts of breach of a release order, one count of impaired driving and one count of fail to provide a breath sample.


Unregistered Firearms

Yesterday afternoon officers from the City Police and the OPP attended at a residence on Grace Street and arrested 54-year old James Dempsey of 1-36 Grace Street. It is alleged that the accused had an unregistered rifle as well as various ammunition in the residence. In additions, officers also located 10.3 grams of marijuana with a street value of just over $200. The accused has been charged with one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm and unauthorized possession of ammunition and one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance. The accused will appear in court on January 16th.

Break and Enter

City Police received one report of a break and enter in the last 24-hour period. A garage in the 300 block of Kingsford Road was entered yesterday afternoon. It is unknown at this time what was taken.
