Reminder to Motorists Regarding Funeral Processions - Duty To Obey All Traffic Signals

Motorists are reminded of the strict duty imposed on every driver by law to obey all traffic signals when operating a vehicle.

It is critically important, contrary to what might be a false belief otherwise, to advise drivers who choose to form part of funeral procession (motorcade) that they are not in anyway exempt from this absolute responsibility at all times.

The only exception to this, as permitted by law, is when a police officer who is physically present directs a driver to proceed otherwise.

Drivers are strongly cautioned that they leave themselves open to prosecution under both provincial and federal legislation should they disobey a traffic signal or any other rule of the road. As well the potential of serious civil consequences should they become involved in a collision.

The safety of our streets is paramount to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and our Community. The cooperation of all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians is encouraged and expected in this regard.
