Police Seek Assistance in Break In

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying two males involved in a break and enter.

On Saturday May 19th at approx. 4:55 pm a home in the 100 block of Birch St. was entered. A short time later the resident arrived home to discover two males in his house. Both males, who were carrying knives, pointed the knives at the home owner and told him not to call police and then fled from the residence. They were last seen running towards St. Basil’s school.

Both suspects are described as Male, Native Canadian, in their teens, approx. 6’ tall, short hair. One was wearing a baseball cap, both had camouflage bandanas, dark clothing and long pants. Anyone having any information on this incident is asked to contact the Sault Ste Marie Police Service or Crime Stoppers at

The following persons will be appearing in bail court this morning:

1) A 25 year-old female was arrested at her downtown residence on the 19th of May at around 9:30 pm and charged with one count of assault, one count of threaten death or bodily harm and two counts of breach of probation. It is alleged that the accused assaulted her mother by punching her several times. It is further alleged that the accused threatened to kill her mother if she called the police. At the time of the incident the accused was on probation to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. The mother did not require medical attention. Further investigation revealed that this accused was also involved in an incident that took place at the Tim Horton’s on Bay Street on the 18th of May around 3 am when she allegedly grabbed a coffee pot and smashed it on the floor, pulled out a knife, pointed it at the clerk and made threats to kill the clerk. The clerk was not injured. Regarding this incident, the accused was further charged with one count of assault with a weapon, one count of mischief under $5,000 and one count of possession of a weapon for purpose dangerous to public.

2) 39 year-old Marcel Sutherland and 28 year-old Annie Sutherland of #212-27 Terry Fox Place were arrested on the 21st of May at their residence and charged with one count of assault with a weapon. It is alleged that on the 7th of May at around 11:30 pm both accused threatened a male not known to them while holding a stick. The two demanded the victim let them into a secure apartment building located in the east end and swung a stick at the male’s head. There were no injuries in this incident. Marcel Sutherland was also charged with one count of breach of a release order.

3) On Saturday May 19th city police officers were called to an east-end address regarding an assault and mischief complaint. Upon arrival officers were informed by the female tenant that she had been assaulted. It is alleged that the accused had attended at the victim’s residence and assaulted her - by grabbing her by the throat and throwing her to the ground. It is further alleged that the accused also assaulted her ex-common-law husband by punching and scratching him. The accused is also alleged to have damaged items in the residence. The accused a 39-year old female is charged with one count of mischief and two counts of assault. She will be appearing in bail court today. Neither victim required medical attention as a result of the assault.

4) On Saturday May 19th City Police were called to a central address regarding two reports of threatening. It is alleged that the accused, a 27-year-old male, threatened his ex-girlfriend on two occasions. The threats were made both verbally and via text-messaging stating that he was going to kill her. The accused will be appearing in bail court today.

5) On Monday May 21st at approx. 9:20 pm City police were called to a north end residence regarding a domestic dispute. It is alleged that the accused, a 39-year-old female, assaulted her husband on May 19th by slamming a door against his back and further on May 21st she threw a beer bottle at him. The accused is charged with one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon. She will be appearing in bail court today. The victim did not require medical attention.

Two Thefts of Purses

This weekend the Sault Ste Marie Police Service received two complaints of thefts involving four to five Greek or Turkish people. In the incidents the suspects would enter a grocery store watch as a shopper used her debit card and then follow the female out of the store. Once in the parking lot one of the suspects would approach the victim and distract her by asking questions or directions. One of the other members of the group would then steal the victim’s purse from the car or the shopping cart. The suspects would then use the debit card to make cash withdrawals. Local businesses are reminded that these thieves are similar to the groups of gypsies that frequently travel through our area.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service received seven reports of mischief over the weekend.

1. A city bus shelter on Great Northern Rd, across from the Cambrian Mall, was damaged.
2. A parking meter on Gore St. was damaged.
3. A vehicle parked in the 600 block MacDonald Ave was damaged.
4. A window was broken at a residence in the 100 block of Gore St.
5. There were two reports of mailboxes being damaged. One was in the 100 block of Albert St.E. And the other was in the 1200 block of Leigh’s Bay Rd.
A group of youths was seen throwing a brick through a door in the 400 block of Queen St.W.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service received ten reports of break and enters over this past long weekend.
Break-ins were reported to:
1. A residence in the 100 block of Forest Ave - electronic equipment was stolen.
2. A residence in the 100 block of Lakeshore Dr. - it is not known what was stolen at this time.
3. An apartment in the 100 block of Wilding Ave. - a lap top computer and some beer was stolen.
4. A residence in the 100 block of Ontario Ave - jewellery was stolen.
5. A residence in the 100 block of Leo Ave. - a lap top computer, two mountain bikes and a purse were stolen.
6. A residence in the 700 block of Goulais Ave- jewellery and electronic equipment were taken.
7. A residence in the 100 block of Breton Rd. - electronic equipment was taken.
8. A residence in the 100 block of Hugill St. - electronic equipment was taken.
9. A residence in the 100 block of Old Goulais Bay Rd. - - electronic equipment was taken.
10. An attempted break-in was reported to a residence in the 100 block of Bennett Blvd on Sat. May 19th.
