Male Charged with Murder The Sault Ste Marie Police Service has a 20 year-old male in custody this morning charged with murder. Shortly after 2 am city police received information of a deceased male at a centrally located apartment.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service has a 20 year-old male in custody this morning charged with murder.

Shortly after 2 am city police received information of a deceased male at a centrally located apartment. Officers attended the apartment and located a male in his 50’s deceased with obvious signs of trauma.

The accused was arrested at approximately 2:30 am at the Greyhound Bus Terminal on Brock Street.

Detectives are still currently on scene and the investigation is continuing. Further details will be released as they become available.

The age and name of the deceased male are not being released at this time until next of kin have been notified.


UPDATE:

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has charged 20 year old Keegan Matthew Periard of Albert St. E. Sault Ste. Marie with First Degree Murder. The accused was arrested by Patrol Officers without incident at the Greyhound Bus terminal on Brock Street at 2:12 a.m. this morning.
Police believe that the victim and accused were known to each other.
It appears that an edged weapon was used during the attack.
Officers from Investigation Services and Forensic Services remain at the scene and are continuing the investigation. Officers from both Investigation Services will continue to canvas the area of the scene over the next couple of days. Forensic officers are expected to continue the crime scene examination for at least another day.
The deceased has been identified as Joseph Charles Reed age 58 of 101 Chapple Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie.
A Post Mortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow morning in Sudbury.
Keegan Periard has been remanded and will appear for a bail hearing on January 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.

Bail Court:

1) At approx. 1:30 am this morning city police arrested a 46-year-old male on an outstanding warrant. It is alleged that Nolan Gibbs, age 46, of 47 Vera St. failed to appear for court on January 23rd, 2008 on a charge of resist arrest. Mr. Gibbs is charged with one count of failing to appear for court and one count of resist arrest. He will be appearing in bail court today at 10:00 am.

2) A 15-year-old female was arrested yesterday morning and charged with one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon. It is alleged that the accused, a ward of a west-end group home assaulted another female ward after the two girls had become involved in an argument. The victim was punched, kicked and struck with a vase before the accused could be restrained. The victim suffered minor injuries and was treated at the group home. The accused will be appearing in bail court today.

Male arrested on fraud charges:

At approx. 12:40 pm yesterday afternoon a 36-year-old male attended at the city police station and turned himself in on outstanding warrants. It is alleged that the accused failed to appear for court on August 15th, 2001 on 14 counts of fraud and 14 counts of forgery. The incidents occurred between March and April 2001. The accused will be appearing in court on one charge of failing to appear for court, 14 counts of fraud and 14 counts of forgery. He new court date is March 9th at 9:00 am.

Property Crimes:

City police received a report of a break and enter yesterday evening. An apartment in the 300 block of Lake St. was entered. Electronic items were stolen.
City police are investigating the theft of a snowmachine and trailer from the 500 block of Lake St.
A door on a residence in the 500 block of Albert St. W. was damaged early this morning. Four teens were seen fleeing from the area.

The name of male arrested on the above charges is Luke LeBlanc, age 36, of 94 Maple St.
