Appealing for Witnesses or Information to assist Police in Investigation into Slingshot Assault and Mischief Incidents:

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is requesting the assistance from the public in an investigation into two separate incidents involving marbles being shot from a slingshot from persons in a vehicle on the 19th of January, 2009. The first incident occurred at approximately 4:25 pm on Queen Street East in front of the Algoma Bicycles Store. A male that was standing in front of the store was struck in the wrist area by a marble shot from a slingshot out of a passing westbound vehicle that had three male occupants inside. The vehicle had slowed down in front of him, when one of the males that was sitting in the front passenger seat, pointed the slingshot at him, yelled out “hey” and he was immediately struck by the marble. The suspect with the slingshot was described as being white, in his late teens or early 20’s, with a buzz cut hairstyle. The victim received non-life threatening injuries that did not require medical attention. The vehicle was described as being an older model, possibly a Hyundai, a purple type of colour, with heavy damage to the front right corner. There was also damage to the rear right corner that had some sort of strap holding the damage area together.

The second incident occurred approximately 15 minutes later when a window at the ATS Building on Bruce Street at Grosvenor Avenue was smashed by a marble. The suspect vehicle was captured on the ATS surveillance video and the description was similar to the suspect vehicle involved in the first incident. This past weekend city police received five separate mischief complaints that involved several windows being smashed by unknown objects. The damage was described as small holes left in the windows. They included three bus shelter windows on McNabb Street, Queen Street East and Sackville Road, a residence window in the 1000 block of Wellington Street East and a McNabb Street Business. It is not know at this time if all the incidents are related or involve the same suspects. Police are continuing the investigation at this time. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, please contact the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service at 949-6300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
