Traffic Statistics and Enforcement

The warm spring and summer days are fast approaching. As a result there will be a heavier volume of traffic on our roadways in addition to children playing on or near the streets and sidewalks. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is committed to providing stepped up traffic enforcement initiatives to effectively deal with and control road side safety issues as well as other traffic management initiatives within Sault Ste Marie and Prince Township.

These selective enforcement initiatives, although ongoing throughout the year, will be increased throughout the spring and summer months when traffic volume is at its heaviest. The initiatives will be complaint driven and or as a result of the analysis of traffic related data by our call analyst. In addition to traffic education, the main objective of these initiatives is to enhance the safety of all citizens using our roadway system as well as the sidewalks. All citizens are reminded to observe and obey the all rules of the road. Officers will show zero tolerance for a majority of the Highway Traffic Act infractions in an ongoing effort to rid our streets of aggressive driving.

Between 01 April 2008 and 09 April 2008 there were 155 Provincial Offence Notices issued for infractions under the Highway Traffic Act. 59 of these were for speeding, Other charges included careless driving, making turns not in safely, disobeying controlled traffic lights, disobeying traffic signs, improper passing of motor vehicles, drive while under driving suspension, fail to surrender licence to name a few. In addition to HTA charges, there were also 35 tickets issued under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

Once again we urge all motorists and pedestrians to obey the rules of the road. Periodically we will release enforcement statistics relative our road safety and traffic management plan and initiatives. Please drive safely.
