Bail Court: 1) On the 28 May 2009 at approximately 12:30 a.m. 30 year old Ancil Peter Dedier attempted to gain entry into the United States via the International Bridge but was refused entry due to an outstanding warrant for a breach of recognizance.
Bail Court:

1) On the 28 May 2009 at approximately 12:30 a.m. 30 year old Ancil Peter Dedier attempted to gain entry into the United States via the International Bridge but was refused entry due to an outstanding warrant for a breach of recognizance. He was arrested at Canada Customs and further charged for an additional breach of recognizance as he was bound by a condition to be in his residence at 11:00 p.m.

2) On the 28 of May 2009 in the early morning hours four young offenders were observed entering a vehicle in the one thousand block of Lake Street where they stole a G.P.S. unit and some assorted change. The four youths also entered a vehicle on Prince Charles Crescent but fled the area when police arrived. A foot chase ensued and all youths were arrested. Two of the youths were on probation orders with curfews and were subsequently held for bail court. The other two were charged and released.
As always, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind people to keep their vehicles locked and to remove anything of value.

Aggravated Assault:

On the 27 May 2009 at approximately 4:00 a.m. 36 year old Duane Normand Newton became involved in a verbal altercation with another male outside his residence at 138 East street apt. #317. The altercation escalated physically and it is alleged that Mr. Newton punched the victim in the face. The victim sustained secondary injury to his head resulting from falling to the ground. He was taken to the hospital and then transported to the Sudbury head trauma unit.

Outstanding Warrant Arrests:

1) 42 year old William Thomas Swanson and 34 year old Steven Smith were both in a motor vehicle that was stopped by an O.P.P. officer on the 27 May 2009 just after 11:00 p.m. on Highway 17 East. They were both arrested for outstanding warrants held by Sault Ste. Marie for failing to appear for court. They were subsequently transported to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and processed.

2) 24 year old Raya Desmond turned herself in to the Sault Ste Marie Police Service on the 27 May 2009 in the afternoon as she was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court two days previous.

Mischief:

A Dodge Mini Van in the downtown area was entered sometime during the early morning hours of the 27 May 2009 and the ignition damaged in an apparent attempt to steal that vehicle.

A vehicle on Wellington Street East in the area of the Sault Area Hospitals had its rear window smashed sometime during the previous night.

Motor Vehicle Collisions with Injuries:

1) On the 27 May 2009 at approximately 1:17 p.m. two vehicles were involved in a collision near the 200 block of Alexandra Street. Both cars were west bound. The lead vehicle being driven by a 54 year old female swerved to the right then attempted an apparent U Turn but struck the other vehicle that was passing on the left. This vehicle was being driven by a 49 year old female. The driver of the lead vehicle sustained injury to her right arm that required medical attention. No charges were laid.

2) On the 27 May 2009 at approximately 9:06 a.m. two vehicles were involved in a collision at the intersection of Queen Street West and Carmen’s Way. A pickup truck driven by a 28 year old male was eastbound on Queen Street West and attempted to turn North onto Carmen’s Way across the path of a westbound car that was being driven by a 59 year old male. The truck was subsequently struck and the driver of the car sustained minimal injuries that required medical attention. The driver of the truck was charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario for failing to afford a reasonable opportunity to avoid a collision while making a left turn.

Bear Sightings:

A bear and two cubs were sighted at approximately 12:10 p.m. on the 27 May 2009 in the Manitou Park area.

A bear was also sighted on the 27 May 2009 at 11:30 a.m. in the Sunset Drive area.

Aside from taking the usual precautions, residents are reminded that they may contact the Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Hotline at 1-(866)-514-2327 to report nuisance bears or sightings. They may also contact the police service if the bear is in a populated area and/or posses a potential safety risk.
