Youth Arrested on Mischief & Breach Charges

A 14-year old youth will appear in bail court this morning after being arrested yesterday morning and charged with one count of mischief under $5,000 and two counts of breach of probation under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). It is alleged that the youth attempted to start a fire in his residence by burning a piece of plastic on a gas fireplace. The plastic melted and some smoke was present but Fire Services were not required. No one was injured in the occurrence. The youth was on probation at the time of the incident with conditions not to possess any matches or lighters and to keep the peace and be good.

Caught after Failing to Appear in Court

25-year old Christine Armstrong of 29 Boston Avenue was arrested yesterday afternoon on an outstanding arrest warrant. It is alleged that on the 11th of September 2006 the accused failed to attend court in relation to a theft charge from August of 2006. The accused will appear in court on April 23rd on one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of fail to attend court.

Yesterday between 1 pm and 9 pm a home on Texas Avenue was broken into and some change was taken.

Watch out for March Breakers

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists that the March Break will be here next week. However students from both school boards will be out of school on Friday March 9th until they return on March 19th. Motorists are reminded to be on the look out for children playing and being on roadways and in crosswalks during times that they would normally be in school. Help make sure that all children in our community have a safe and accident free March Break.

How to protect your home from Robbers

The March Break is also a time when many families take a holiday and leave the City. Make sure that you take steps to reduce your chances of having your home broken into. Some of the following crime prevention tips should be considered:
1) Use lights on timers
2) Let your neighbours know that you are away and when you will be returning.
3) Arrange for your mail to be held by Canada Post and for your newspaper to be put on hold until you return. Or you can ask someone to collect your mail and newspaper on a daily basis to prevent the build up of these items in your mailbox.
4) Arrange for someone to shovel your driveway.
5) Consider having a neighbour park their car in your driveway so that it looks like someone is home.
6) Have someone check your house on a daily basis.
7) If you know your neighbours are away and see someone suspicious around their home, don’t hesitate to report the activity to the police.
8) Make sure all your windows and doors are locked and that sliding patio doors are secured.
