Tour Bus On Fire The Sault Ste. Marie Police Services and the Sault Fire Services were kept busy just after 2 am this morning. Around 2:18 am Police and Fire personnel attended at the rear of the Best Western Hotel for a tour bus that was on fire.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Services and the Sault Fire Services were kept busy just after 2 am this morning. Around 2:18 am Police and Fire personnel attended at the rear of the Best Western Hotel for a tour bus that was on fire. The fire destroyed the bus and damage is estimated at $20,000. Around 2:28 am both emergency services responded to another fire. This time a dumpster was lit on fire behind the Dollarama Store at 293 Northern Avenue. City Police have taken an 18-year-old male into custody regarding the 2 arsons and are currently continuing their investigation. Further information, including all of the charges, will be released later today. No one was hurt in the incidents.

UPDATE:
Patrol Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service have continued to work on the investigation since the time of the arrest of the accused person for the 2 fires. During the course of the investigation at the 2 locations officers have determined that the accused person was also responsible for damaging a vehicle in the parking lot of the Best Western. It is alleged that car had been walked across on the hood and roof and was also missing a small amount of coins. When officers searched the accused upon arrest it is alleged that they found stolen property on him from another vehicle that had been parked in the 200 block of Great Northern Road as well as property from the vehicle from the Best Western. At the time of the offence the accused was on a release document with conditions to be in his residence between 11 pm and 7 am.
18-year old Brandon Horner of 123 Chicora Crescent has been charged with:
1) 2 counts of arson-damage to property of others in relation to the fire at the bus and the dumpster fire.
2) 2 counts of theft under $5,000
3) 1 count of possession of property obtained by crime
4) 1 count of mischief under $5,000
5) 1 count of breach of a release order.
Mr. Horner will appear in bail court this morning.

Male Charged With Mischief

A 22-year old male was arrested just before 11:30 pm last night. It is alleged that yesterday afternoon the accused threw a rock through a family members front windshield of her vehicle, which was parked at her downtown residence. At the time of the incident the accused was on conditions, both from a release order and a probation order, not to harass or annoy the female family member. The accused was also on probation with terms to keep the peace and be good. The accused was located later in the day and has been charged with one count of mischief, one count of breach of a release order and two counts of breach of probation. The accused will be appearing in bail court this morning. The name of the accused is not being released, as it will identify the victim.

Youth Arrested on Outstanding Warrants

A 16-year old youth was arrested yesterday morning on outstanding warrants. The youth was wanted for 4 counts of breach of probation. The youth will appear in bail court this morning.

Mischief under 5,000 charge Laid against Male

45-year old Donald Levesque of 1-62 Wellington Street West was arrested last evening around 8 pm. It is alleged that the accused kicked and damaged a door of a residence in the 100 block of Wellington Street West. Mr. Levesque has been charged with one count of mischief under $5,000 and will appear in court on September 5th.

City Police advise that there have been no break and enters reported in the last 24 hours.


Bear Sightings

City Police are still receiving reports of bear sightings in the City. Last evening around 8:30 pm a caller advised a bear cub had crossed Second Line East near the Humane Society and ran into the bush area. This morning around 4 am a caller reported a larger bear crossed Second Line West in the 2000 block and ran into a ditch in this area. The public is again reminded not to leave food out where the bears can access it; this includes bird feeders and animal food.
