Male arrested for sexual assault
Early this morning members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested a 32-year-old male for sexual assault. It is alleged that on July 9th the accused attended at the residence of his ex-wife and while there he grabbed her breasts. The accused is charged with one count of sexual assault.

Three persons arrested for drug offences
Yesterday morning members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Street Team, Emergency Services Unit, Patrol Services and the O.P.P. Canine Unit executed a drug search warrant at 9 Railroad Ave. and arrested three persons at that residence John Vipond, age 36, Joanne Denis, age 34, and a young male were all arrested for various drug offences.

It is alleged that John Vipond was in possession of 33.3 grams of cocaine, 3.2 grams of marihuana, 2.3 grams of cannabis resin and three ecstasy pills. It is further alleged that the accused was in possession of a knife that opened by centrifugal force – a prohibited weapon. At the time of these offences the accused was on a recognizance release order with conditions to not possess any non-prescription drugs and to not possess any prohibited weapons.

John Vipond, age 36, of 9 Railroad Ave is charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of a prohibited weapon, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of breach of a recognizance and one count of breaching a court order. The estimated street value of the drugs is $3,515.00. Mr. Vipond will be appearing in bail court today.

When police executed the drug warrant at 9 Railroad Ave a young male was arrested. It is alleged that the youth was in possession of a small amount of marihuana and a small amount of cannabis resin. The youth is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and is to appear in court on Aug 23rd at 9:30 am.

Male arrested on a warrant for failing tom appear for identification
Yesterday afternoon members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested a 56-year-old male on a warrant. It is alleged that the accused failed to appear at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Station on June 21st for finger prints. Richard Gardener, age 56, of 710 Shafer Ave is charged with one count of failing to appear for identification. Mr. Gardener is to appear in court on Aug 2nd at 9:00 am.

Break and enter
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is investigating two reported break and enters.

A residence in the 200 block of Birch St. was entered yesterday. Electronic items were stolen.

This morning at 12:45 am two males were seen fleeing from a break-in at a residence in the 300 block of Albert St. E. One of the suspects was wearing a white sweater.

Theft
Vehicles were entered in the following locations:

The 400 block of Northland Rd – a small amount of cash was taken.

The 200 block of Queen St. W. – personal papers were stolen.

The 700 block of Shafer Ave- electronics and cash were stolen.

A bicycle was stolen from the 300 block of St. George’s Ave E.

Twelve motorists charged with holding/ using cell phones
A joint campaign, targeting cell phone use, was held yesterday by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and the O.P.P. Officers performing roadside stops in different areas of the city charged twelve persons with “Holding/ Using an electronic entertainment device or a cell phone while driving a motor vehicle” under the Highway Traffic Act. This section carries a fine of $155.00.

Note to the public
Under this section of the Highway Traffic Act a person cannot be holding or using a cell phone or entertainment device while operating a motor vehicle on a road. You must be legally parked or off the road way when holding or using this device.
