Update to Fatal Snowmobile Accident: The investigation into this fatal snowmobile accident is currently continuing by Officers from Traffic Services, Patrol and Forensic Services and the Coroner’s office.
Update to Fatal Snowmobile Accident:

The investigation into this fatal snowmobile accident is currently continuing by Officers from Traffic Services, Patrol and Forensic Services and the Coroner’s office.

Early investigation indicates that the accident occurred just after 7 pm on the Ontario Federation Snowmobile Club Groomed trail approximately 500 metres from the end of Old Goulais Bay Road. A Trail Groomer was in the process of grooming the trail in a curved area when he observed fresh snowmobile tracks leaving the groomed trail, going over an embankment. A snowmobile was observed approximately 25 feet down the embankment. The driver was found unconscious under the snowmachine. Officers from the OPP, Sault Ste Marie Police Service, Fire and Ambulance Services responded. The 35 year-old male driver was transported to hospital by ambulance but succumbed to his injuries. A post mortem will be conducted tomorrow morning to determine the cause of death.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

It is still early in the investigation and no further details will be released at this time.

Several wanted persons were arrested by city police yesterday and overnight:

1) 45 year-old Grant O’Brien of 285 Cathcart Street was arrested on the 28th of January at 11:40 am at his residence and charged with one count of assault and one count of threaten death or bodily harm. It is alleged that he was wanted from an incident that took place on the 25th of January at approximately 10:25 pm at a downtown residence when he assaulted a female known to him by punching her in the face. During the incident the accused also threatened to cut her with a knife. The victim received non-life threatening injuries to her face, not requiring medical attention. He is to appear in bail court.

2) 42 year-old Dwayne Guy of 287 North Street was arrested on the 29th of January at 12:50 am on outstanding warrants when police located him walking on St. Andrew’s Terrance. It is alleged that he was wanted for breaching release documents by failing to report to the John Howard Society on the 29th of October and failing to appear for court on the 1st of December. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

3) 57 year-old James Marini of 2866 Hwy 532 in Searchmont, Ontario was arrested by city police at 2:40 am this morning on Wallace Terrace on outstanding warrants and charged with two counts so f breach of release documents. It is alleged that city police observed the accused walking on Wallace Terrace around 2:40 am and when they ran a check on him they discovered he was on a recognizance order with a curfew to be in his residence from 9 pm to 7 am daily and that he was not to be in the city of Sault Ste. Marie except to attend at the John Howard Society for appointments. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

4) 27 year-old Michael Coe of 30 Limeridge Road in Hamilton, Ontario was arrested this morning around 3:30 am after turning himself in at the police station on outstanding warrants. He was charged with one count of fail to appear court on the 19th of June drug related charges and one count of breach of a release order for not notifying the city police of his change of address. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

5) 18 year-old Brock Kinnunen of 151 Sackville was arrested on the 28th of January at 12:15 pm at the police station on an outstanding warrant and charged with one count of fail to appear for prints on the 19th of January in relation to an assault charge. He is to appear in court on the 2nd of March.

Female Driver Injured in Motor Vehicle Collision on Pim Street:

City police attended at a motor vehicle collision at 12:54 pm yesterday afternoon at Pim Street near Bruce Street that sent one 21 year-old female driver to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. It is alleged that on the 28th of January at approximately 12:48 pm the 21 year-old female, operating a Pontiac Sunfire, pulled out of a business parking lot on Pim Street into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Montana Van that had been travelling southbound on Pim Street. The 21 year-old female driver, Ashley Preston of 386 Borden Avenue was charged with one count of turn not in safety under the Highway Traffic Act. Her vehicle was severely damaged. No other injuries were reported.

Property Crimes:

Break and Enter Reports:


• An apartment in the 1000 block of Wellington Street East was entered yesterday sometime between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm. An Acer Laptop, a PS2 and three games were reported stolen.
• A residence on Elmwood Avenue was entered yesterday sometime between 9:30 am and 5:20 pm. Electronic items were reported stolen.
• A residence on Lansdowne Avenue was entered sometime yesterday. Some change and jewellery were reported stolen.

Mischief Reports:

• A back window and rear lights were smashed on a vehicle parked in the apartment complex on Old Garden River Road sometime overnight on the 27th-28thth of January.
• A window was broken at Minelli’s Restaurant on Pine Street.
• A house on Pentagon Boulevard was egged just after midnight last night.

Thefts:

• Two vehicles were reported entered in the 400 block of McNabb Street and the 100 Block of Biggings Avenue. Booster cables and a Backpack were reported stolen.
