The following persons will appear in bail court this morning:

1) A 72-year old male was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged with one count of assault, one count of threatening to cause death or bodily harm and two counts of unsafe storage of firearm. It is alleged that the accused and his wife became involved in a verbal argument and police attended. It is alleged that the accused spit on his wife and threatened to kill her. Officers also located two rifles stored in an unsafe manner.

Second Person Arrested in Assault

20-year old Marc Major of 284 Second Avenue was arrested yesterday afternoon and charge with one count of assault. It is alleged that on January 5th the accused assaulted a male by punching him and breaking his glasses. The accused will appear in court on February 5th.


Update: Yesterday morning officers from Investigation Services arrested a second male in connection with this assault. 20-year old Michael Leziert of 284 Second Avenue has been charged with one count of assault and one count of breach of probation. He will appear in court on February 12th.

Police Seek Assistance in Market Mall Dumpster Fire

News release January 8th

On the 7th of January around 7 pm a 16-year old male youth and a 14-year old male youth lit a dumpster on fire with gasoline at the Market Mall on Second Line West. The youths then fled the area. Fire Services and officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service attended at the fire. Shortly after 7 pm both youths were taken into custody. Both youths have been charged with one count each of arson-damage to property of others and one count each of possession of incendiary material. The 16-year old youth will appear in bail court this morning. The 14-year old youth will appear in court on February 13th. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is asking anyone who witnessed this arson to contact them at 949-6300.


Update: Officers from Investigation Services are continuing this investigation and it has been determined that a person in a dark coloured mini van exchanged words with these two youths just prior to the fire. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is looking for this witness to interview. If you are this person or know who this witness is contact the Sault Ste. Two Youth Charged for Vandalism

Two fifteen-year-old male youths were arrested last evening in connection with an act of vandalism. It is alleged that the two youths spray painted a garage in the 100 block of Tancred Street. Officers located the accused persons shortly after the incident. Officers also located a small amount of cannabis on one of the males. Both males have been charged with one count each of mischief under $5,000. One of the youths has been charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance. The second youth has been charged with one count of breach of probation under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). Both males will appear in court on February 13th.

Assault Charges Laid

A 23-year old male was arrested yesterday morning and charged with one count of assault. It is alleged that the accused assaulted his wife by grabbing her, shaking her and throwing her on the bed yesterday morning during a dispute. The accused will appear in court on February 11th.

Shoplifting from R.J.'s

39-year old Daniel Tahti of 95 Yates Street was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged with one count of theft under $5,000. It is alleged that the accused attended at R.J.’s Market and left the store without paying for some steaks. The accused was apprehended by store employees and turned over to police. He will appear in court on February 12th.

Dog Attack on Wilding Ave.

Yesterday afternoon around 2:40 pm officers from Patrol Services and Investigation Services attended at an address in the 100 block of Wilding Avenue in regards to an adult female being attacked by a large dog. Neighbours who heard the victim screaming for help came to her aid and hit the dog with a broom and assisted the female from exiting the residence. She had been alone in the residence at the time. The female was taken to the Sault Area Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The dog involved is a neopolitan mastiff. The Chief of Police signed an order under the Dog Owners Liability Act and the dog was seized last night with the assistance of the Humane Society. The investigation is continuing.
