Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and OPP Charge Numerous Drivers During Distracted Driving Initiative:

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is committed to ensuring the safety of all motorists on our roadways. Over the past two days, officers with the Sault Ste Marie Police Service Traffic Unit and the Highway Safety Division of the Ontario Provincial Police conducted a joint targeted enforcement initiative specifically targeting drivers using or holding hand held communication and entertainment devices.  As a result of the initiative, 19 drivers were charged with holding or using a cell phone while driving.  The majority of the drivers advised they knew it was an offence to use a cell phone while driving.

Drivers are reminded that the fine for holding or using a hand held entertainment device is $155.00.  As a driver in Ontario, you are exempt from this law if you are calling “911″ as a result of an emergency or if you are pulled over safely off of the roadway or you are properly parked.

Distracted drivers are a safety risk to themselves and others. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will continue to enforce the distracting driving laws.
