Motor Vehicle Inspections
On July 30th and 31st, members of the Sault Ste Marie Police Service Traffic Services and Patrol Services conducted roadside compliance checks in various locations within the city. The focus of these inspections was to ensure that all motor vehicles operating in our city are road worthy and ultimately safe to be operated on the streets. With this focus, sixty vehicles were checked over the two day period. One of the vehicles inspected was found to be in an unsafe condition which resulted in the driver being charged with operating an unsafe vehicle. The vehicle plates and registration were seized. Other charges resulting from the inspections include one driver being charged with drive while suspended. Three drivers were charged with driving without a licence, which resulted in their vehicles being parked. In total twenty five charges and eighteen warnings were issued during the safety checks. In addition to above noted offences, drivers were charged with a wide variety of offences including improper muffler, obstructed windshield, obstructed licence plate, failing to surrender their drivers licence, ownership and/or insurance papers. A special effort was made, by the officers, to educate drivers on minor defects on their vehicles which included, tire tread depth, rust holes forming, headlight covers, burnt out marker lights and the like.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, in keeping with the ever important emphasis that we all place on road safety, will be setting up additional random motor vehicle inspection stations over the remainder of the summer. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service encourages all drivers to ensure that their vehicles are safe for the highway and to have defects repaired by someone qualified to do the repair.
