Seeking Public’s Assistance in Identifying Suspect in Value Village Arson Fire at the Northern Avenue Plaza

Investigation Services with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in the arson incident that occurred at the Value Village at 242 Northern Avenue. At approximately 12:39 am on the 3rd of April an unknown male attended at the rear of the Value Village and set fire to some donation items, mainly mattresses and other furniture. A bay door area at the rear of the Value Village building was also damaged as a result of the fire.

Seeking Public’s Assistance with Identifying Suspect in Animalia Arson Fire at the Northern Avenue Plaza

Investigation Services with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in the arson incident that occurred at the Northern Avenue Plaza on the evening of Friday the 2nd of April. At approximately 11:11 pm an unknown person attended in front of the Animalia Pets and Supplies Store at 288 Northern Avenue and set the garbage can on fire. The suspect appears to be wearing a sports jersey with the number 32 on it. The suspect may have fled from the scene in a min-van. Fire Services attended on scene and extinguished the fire. There was property and smoke damage to the Animalia and other surrounding businesses as a result of the fire.

Domestic Related Arrests for Bail Court Appearance

A 22 year-old male was arrested on the 8th of April at 4:15 am at the police station after turning himself in on outstanding domestic related warrant. He has been charged with one count of assault, one count of mischief and one count of operate motor vehicle while disqualified.

A 28 year-old male was arrested on the 7th of April at 3:21 pm and charged with one count of beach of probation. It is alleged that yesterday afternoon city police attended at a downtown residence for a domestic dispute and when they attended they found the accused was on conditions not to communicate, molest, harass or annoy, or be at the residence of the female due to past domestic related charges.

Shoplifting Arrest

46 year-old Paula-Ann Derasp of #305-844 Queen Street East was arrested on the 7th of April at 4:58 pm at Zellers at the Station Mall and charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00, one count of fail to appear court and one count of breach of a release order. It is alleged that the accused attended at the store at approximately 4:40 pm and stole some jewellery and a pair of glasses. When police attended they discovered that the accused was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear court and also that she was on an undertaking not to attend at the Station Mall. She is to appear in bail court this morning.

45 year-old Annette Buczel of no fixed address was arrested on the 7th of April at 12:15 pm at Zellers in the Station Mall and charged with one count of mischief. It is alleged that on the 7th of April she attended at the store and stole a pair of sandals. When officers attended they discovered that there was an outstanding warrant for the accused for a mischief incident from March. She is to attend in court on the 10th of May.

52 year-old Daniel Caruso of #1-278 Sixth Ave was arrested on the 7th of April at Joe’s No Frills on Korah Road and charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00 after he allegedly attended at the store and stole some Swiss cheese. He is to appear in court on the 7th of April.

Impaired Driving Arrests

23 year-old Scott Koshowski 136 Greenview Court was arrested at 1:58 am this morning on Trunk Road and charged with one count of impaired driving and one count of consume over the legal limit. It is alleged that at 1:44 am this morning city police received a call regarding an impaired driver that was operating a Chev pickup truck in the area of Bay Street. Police located the vehicle on Bay Street a short time later and found the accused under the influence of alcohol. He is to appear in court on the 31st of May.

56 year-old John Daprat of 269 Pittsburgh was arrested at 1:56 am this morning at Canada Customs on Huron Street and charged with one count of consume over the legal limit. It is alleged that the accused was operating a Jeep and when he was stopped and checked by Customs Officers he was found to be under the influence of alcohol and registered a fail on the roadside screening device He is to appear in court on the 31st of May.

Break and Enter Reports

• A residence on St. Basil’s Drive was broken into. Electronic equipment and liquor was reported stolen.
• A residence on First Avenue was entered. A number of items were reported stolen.
• An attempt break and enter was reported to a garage and trailer on Boundary Road.

Mischief and Thefts from Vehciles

Vehicles in the downtown area and the east end were broken into overnight. Three purses and a laptop were reported stolen.

Once again, citizens should remember to keep their vehicles locked at all times and always remove anything of value. If anything of value must be stored in the vehicle, then it should be hidden from plain view or secured in the trunk. Vigilance by locking vehicles and removing items of temptation will greatly reduce incidents of theft.

With the overnight t snowfall, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to advise and remind motorists to please slow down and adjust your driving to the road conditions. A lot of fresh snow did fall overnight and road conditions may be slippery, especially near intersections. Allow yourself a little extra time. Drive safely and be extra cautious in the school areas.
