A call regarding a suspicious person in a McNabb Street parking lot has led to multiple charges against a 44-year-old.

On April 9 around 10 p.m., a 911 call reported a suspicious person in a parking lot in the 200 block of McNabb Street.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded and found someone who matched the description of the person they were looking for.

While speaking with the individual, the person gave officers a false identity though officers were able to identify the suspect and found they were wanted on an Ontario Provincial Police warrant.

The accused attempted to resist arrest and run away before being taken into custody by police.

Police say the individual was also found to be in possession of approximately one gram of suspected fentanyl and a gram of suspected heroin.

Christopher Mercer has been charged with:

  • obstruct peace officer
  • resist peace officer
  • possession of schedule I substance (x2)
  • failure to comply with release order

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing and the Ontario Provincial Police attended and arrested the accused on the strength of their warrant.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Mercer is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
