The Sault Police Service conducted a RIDE program yesterday. Mothers Against Drunk Driving sponsored the checkpoint as part of their weeklong campaign to combat impaired driving. 500 vehicles were checked. Officers conducted 7 roadside tests and handed out three 12-hour suspensions.

At 1:55am, a 1966 Ford approached the checkpoint at a high rate of speed. The driver slammed on the brakes, which caused the vehicle to swerve toward the officers and the MADD volunteers. No one was hit or injured.

Harold Conway, age 38 of Sault Ste. Marie, was arrested for impaired driving.
