A license plate check on a passing vehicle has resulted in impaired driving charges for a Sault Ste. Marie man.

Sault police say that shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday, a traffic stop was conducted on McNabb Street when a plate check revealed that the plates had been reported missing or stolen.

The man was arrested when police discovered he was a suspended driver. Upon searching the area, officers allegedly found the driver to be in possession of drug paraphernalia, and formed the opinion that his ability to operate avehicle was impaired by drugs.

Police have reported that the accused performed poorly in a drug recognition evaluation. As a result, William Kingston, 54, has been charged with impaired driving (alcohol and drugs), operation while prohibited, and two counts of driving while under suspension.

He is scheduled to appear before a judge on Aug. 31.
