Sawed-off shotgun discovery prompted Leighs Bay Road stand off

On Jan. 20, 2019, officers with the Patrol Services Division, Investigation Services Division and Emergency Services Unit of The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested a 35-year-old male from Sault Ste. Marie for firearms offences.

Just before 10 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle in 1400 block of Leighs Bay Road and found that the male driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was wanted on a surety revocation warrant.

As officers were speaking with the male, they observed a sawed-off shotgun in the vehicle. Officers withdrew to a safe location and the area was contained. Officers maintained contact with the accused until he eventually came out of the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident at approximately 3:10 p.m.

The accused has been charged with:
    •    One count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,
    •    One count of unauthorized possession of a firearm,
    •    One count of unauthorized possession of a weapon,
    •    One count of possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized,
    •    One count of possession of a prohibited firearm,
    •    One count of possession of a firearm knowing its possession is prohibited,
    •    One count of unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle; and,
    •    One count of breach of recognizance.

He was held for bail court.
