Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is investigating a complaint alleging one of its members hosted a gathering sometime "around the new year."

Police spokesperson Lincoln Louttit tells SooToday the force's professional standards bureau is currently investigating in order to "determine the validity of the complaint."

"This is an ongoing investigation and details will not be made public at this time," Louttit said.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Chief Hugh Stevenson told SooToday's Darren Taylor last week that police would be prepared to lay charges on New Year's Eve if it discovered indoor gatherings in violation of current COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

“Each call for service, including a COVID related call, is handled on a case-by-case basis. But make no mistake, our officers will lay charges and issue fines if people are found to be violating provincial regulations,” Stevenson said.

A brief review of restrictions and fines for violating the current COVID-19 lockdown rules can be found here.
