Sault Police say a man broke into a car early yesterday morning — and when confronted, tried to hit the other person with a baseball bat.

Officers were dispatched to a robbery call in the 100 block of Great Northern Road at around 7 a.m. on Thursday.

Although the suspect had fled the scene, police say he was “quickly located” and arrested in the 100 block of Oryme Street.

A subsequent search turned up stolen mail, police allege.

Christopher Rivard, 39, is charged with:

  • Robbery with Theft
  • Assault with Weapon
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Under $5,000 x2
  • Theft from Mail – Sent by Post
  • Failure to Comply with Probation Order x3
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order – Other Than to Attend Court
  • Failure to Attend Court While on Release Order

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Rivard is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
