On at least two occasions local restaurants have received calls from someone claiming to be a public health inspector offering to inspect the restaurant for a fee.
Neither of the potential victims accepted the offer and notified Algoma Public Health.
Recently, Algoma Public Health (APH) notified the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service about fraudulent activity where individuals are posing as public health inspectors from APH.
Sault Police and Algoma Public Health advise any business normally inspected by APH to be aware of this fraudulent activity. Businesses regularly inspected by APH public health inspectors include restaurants, salons/spas, tattoo studios, body piercing establishments and other businesses that offer personal services.
All restaurant inspections provided by Algoma Public Health are free and Public Health Inspectors would never ask for a credit card number. Inspectors also carry a valid badge and photo identification.
If you are contacted by someone attempting to schedule an inspection and asking for a credit card, please call police.
If businesses are in doubt about an inspector, contact APH at 705-759-5286 to check if an inspector is employed by APH.
