Sault Police will be closely monitoring the City Landfill on Fifth Line following reports of garbage and debris on the road in the area.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release issued today that reports indicate that insecure loads have resulted in "debris falling onto the roadway and shoulders."

Police remind landfill users that Section 111(2) of the Highway Traffic Act states:

  • Proper Loading
    • (2) No person shall operate or permit to be operated upon a highway a motor vehicle that carries a load or draws a vehicle that carries a load unless the load is loaded, bound, secured, contained or covered so that no portion of the load may become dislodged or fall, leak, spill or blow from the vehicle.  2002, c. 18, Sched. P, s. 26.

An insecure load can result in a fine of $160.
