One seriously injured, highway closed after overnight collision between pickup, transport (update: highway reopened, cause determined)

Traffic was backed up heading north of the city on Highway 17 but the road has since reopened

1:15 p.m. update:

Investigation has determined that a north-bound GMC Sierra crossed the centre line and struck a south-bound transport.

The driver of the GMC was extricated from the vehicle and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the transport was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.

9:38 a.m. update:

Sault Police report that Great Northern Road has been reopened.

The investigation into the collision continues.

A driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries after the pickup they were driving collided with a transport overnight, says a Sault Police spokesperson.

The collision happened on Highway 17 north of the city, which remains closed.

Few details are available, but police say work is underway to clear the scene and reopen the highway. 

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
