Domestic Related Arrests

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested a 17 year-old male youth on the 30th of September at 3:18 pm at his residence and charged him with two counts of assault, one count of assault with a weapon, one count of threaten death and two counts of breach of probation.

It is alleged that on the 30th of September the accused assaulted his common law girlfriend at their residence by punching and kicking her numerous times. The accused also threatened to kill her and struck her in the face with a cell phone. When the victim attempted to call police with the phone, the accused smashed it.

When officers were investigating the incident they discovered that the accused also assaulted the victim by pushing her down a flight of stairs at their residence between March 1st and May 31st, 2011. The victim received non-life threatening injuries as a result of the assaults. At the time of the incidents the accused was on probation orders with conditions that he keep the peace and be of good behavior.

Male Arrested on Outstanding Warrant

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 27 year-old Brian Wing of 13 Kim Drive Beaumont Park, Heyden on the 30th of September on an outstanding warrant and charged him with one count f fail to appear court. It is alleged that on the 28th of July the accused fail to appear court

Male Arrested for Breaching Release Documents

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 25 year-old John Merkel of no fixed address on the 2nd of October at 12:25 am on Queen Street East and charged him with two counts of breach of a release document. It is alleged that on the 2nd of October at 12:20 am officers observed the accused sitting in a parked vehicle on Queen Street East and when they ran a check on him they discovered that he was on a recognizance order with conditions that he residence with his surety in Port Sydney, Ontario and was also to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

Female Arrested for Assault with a Weapon

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 18 year-old Jennifer Nolan-Gibbs of #301-524A Goulais Avenue on the 1st of October at the police station and charged her with two counts of assault with a weapon. On the 30th of September at approximately 6:35 pm officers received a call to a business parking lot in the 600 block of Wellington Street West regarding two females being sprayed with bear spray.

When officers arrived they discovered that the accused, and a second female suspect responsible for the assault, had fled from the area. It is alleged that the two female victims were sprayed by one of the suspects, as the other, the accused, encouraged her and directed her to do so. One of the victims was struck in the face and eyes and required medical attention at the hospital.

The accused females and the victims were known to each other. The accused is to appear in court on the 31st of October. Police know the identity of the second female suspect and are attempting to locate her.

Male Driving Stolen Vehicle Arrested for Fail to Remain at Accident involving Two Pedestrians

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 25 year-old Joseph Bennett of 2683 Great Northern Road on the 30th of September at 2:40 pm and charged him with one count of fail to remain at the scene of an accident and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.

It is alleged that on the 28th of September at approximately 1:21 pm the accused was operating a stolen 1996 Hyundai Elantra with stolen licence plates on it in the parking lot of Tim Horton/Wendy’s on Great Northern Road. When the accused was reversing the vehicle he struck two pedestrians, causing one of them to fall down onto the pavement. The accused stopped momentarily, checked on the pedestrians, but then left the scene before giving his name and address to them.

The vehicle was later found abandoned on Peoples Road and the accused was located two days later by officers and arrested. Both female pedestrians received non-life threatening injuries as a result of the collision, with one attending at the hospital for medical treatment. The accused is to appear in court on the 7th of November.

Shoplifting Arrests

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 27 year-old Glen Pelchat of 331 Sydenham Road on the 30th of September at Joe’s No Frills and charged him with one count of theft under $5,000. It is alleged that on September 30th, at approximately 6:01 pm, the accused attended at was at the grocery store and stole three containers of Tylenol pain reliever. He is to appear in court on the 31st of October.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 39 year-old James Syrette of Room #35-304 Albert Street West on the 1st of October and charged him with two count of theft under $5,000 and one count of breach of probation. It is alleged that 28th of August and the 1st of October the accused attended at the Metro on Churchill Boulevard and stole several packages of steaks. At the time the incidents the accused was on a probation order with conditions to keep the peace and be good. He is to appear in court on the 25th of October.

Break and Enter/ Theft Reports

• A trailer on a property in the 1000 block Third Line East was broken into sometime over the weekend. Power tools were reported stolen.

• Three vehicles had windows smashed to gain entry in the areas of Queen Street and Woodward Avenue. Wallets, cash and identification left inside were reported stolen.

• Bikes were reported stolen from the Sault College residence area, Trelawne Avenue and in the Jamestown area.

• Licence plates were reported stolen off vehicles on Bay Street, Second Line West, Wellington Street West and Wellington Street East.

• A full 5 gallon can of gas was stolen from Trelawne Avenue.
