VICTIM IDENTIFIED IN FATAL ATV ACCIDENT

At approximately 4:30 pm on the 25th of May, 2008 the Sault Ste Marie Police Service with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police and the Anishinabek Police Service responded to a collision involving an All Terrain Vehicle along the sand berm near the east city limits adjacent to the new section of Highway 17 East.

The driver of the ATV, 15 year-old Christopher McDonagh of Sault Ste. Marie, was transported to Sault Area Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Preliminary investigation has determined that Christopher McDonagh was travelling northbound across the top of gravel, sand berm, when he lost control of the ATV down a steep embankment, the ATV rolled and struck the ground area resulting in the driver being thrown from the vehicle. At the time of the accident, he was travelling with another male youth that was operating another ATV.
Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Traffic Investigation Services, Forensic Services, along with the Coroner’s Office are continuing the investigation at this time.

City Police Investigating an Armed Robbery at local Grocery Store

At approximately 12:07 am this morning city police were called to an armed robbery at Pino’s Get Fresh Foods on Trunk Road. A lone male smashed a front window, entered the store and pointed a shotgun at three employees that were working inside the store at the time. The suspect, wearing a black ski mask, demanded cash, but fled on foot from the store empty handed. The employees were not physically harmed. Officers searched the area with assistance of the Canine Unit, but were unsuccessful in locating the suspect.

The male suspects is described as being approximately 18 years of age, 5’8” – 5’10”, slim build, light blue eyes, wearing black clothes, a black ski balaclava type ski mask and a black coat.
The robbery is currently under investigation at this time by Investigation Services.

Domestic Related Arrests

1) A 55 year-old male was arrested on the 24th of May at 11:05 am at a downtown residence and charged with one count of threatened death or bodily harm and one count of theft under $5,000.00. It is alleged that in the morning hours on the 24th of May the accused got into a verbal argument with his common law spouse at their residence and he threatened to kill her. When police were investigating the incident the victim also complained that the accused has stolen a ring that belonged to her. The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.

2) A 27 year-old male was arrested on the 25th of May at 9:55 pm at his residence and charged with one count of threaten death or bodily harm and one count of assault. It is alleged that on the 25th of May at approximately 9:20 pm the accused got into an argument with his common law spouse while driving in their vehicle. The accused stopped the vehicle and when the victim attempted to get out he threatened her and grabbed her around the wrist and twisted it. The victim received non-life threatening injuries. The accused is to appear in court on the 2ndd of July.

Male Arrested for Death Threats

A 19 year-old male was arrested on the 25th of May at 6:44 pm at his residence and charged with two counts of threatened death or bodily harm. It is alleged that on the evening of the 24th of May the accused called the residence of his ex-girlfriend and when the father answered the phone he threatened to kill him and burn down his house. The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.

Female Arrested for Possession and Mischief to Stolen Vehicle

33 year-old Tamara Wilson of #806-80 King Edward in London Ontario was arrested on the 25th of May at approximately 7:44 pm on Bloor Street and charged with one count of possession of property obtained by crime and mischief. It is alleged that city police were called to Bloor Street regarding a report of a female smashing windows of a vehicle parked on Bloor Street. When officers attended and investigated the incident they discovered that the vehicle, a 2007 Toyota Camry, was a reported stolen vehicle from London, Ontario and that the accused had driven the vehicle from London to Sault Ste. Marie on the 24th of May. The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.

Hit and Run Impaired Driver Arrested and Charged

49 year-old Christopher McDonald of 79 Adrian Drive was arrested on the 25th of May around noon at his residence and charged with one count of impaired driving, one count of consume over the legal limit and one count of fail to remain at accident. It is alleged that on the 25th of May at approximately 11:09 am the accused was operating his pick up truck northbound on Boundary Road when he entered the southbound lane and struck a Toyota Sienna Van and left the scene. The driver of the Toyota Van contacted police with the license plate and vehicle information and attempted to follow the accused. Officers were able to locate the accused and his vehicle a short while later at his residence. There were no injuries reported in the accident and both vehicles received a moderate amount of damage.
The accused is to appear in court on the 30th of June.

Property Crimes:

The following five break and enters were reported over the weekend

1) A residence on Shannon Road was entered sometime over the weekend. A Wii Bundle and some games were reported stolen.
2) There was an attempt break and enter reported to a residence on Willow Avenue.
3) An attempt break and enter was reported to a garage in the 200 block of Fourth Line.
4) An attempt break and enter was reported to a residence on Douglas Street.
5) A residence on Poplar Avenue was entered sometime during the day on the 25th of May. Two televisions were reported stolen.

The following nine mischief reports were taken over the weekend

1) A sign in front of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Church on St. George’s Avenue was damaged.
2) A vehicle parked in the parking lot of the Restaurant on Great Northern Road near Northern Avenue was damaged.
3) The bus shelter at the corner of McNabb Street and Willow Avenue was damaged.
4) The trail lighting box in the area of Landsilde Road and Fifth Line was damaged.
5) A wine bottle was thrown through a front picture window of a residence on Cathcart Street.
6) Two front tires were slashed on a vehicle that was parked at a hotel on Great Northern Road.
7) Tires were slashed on a vehicle at the Enterprise Rent A Car on Great Northern Road.
8) A vehicle was broken into after a window was in the parking lot of the Legion on Great Northern Road. A gym bag was stolen.
9) A window was smashed at an office in the 500 block of Queen Street East.
